GARY BERNASCONI — THE "ARTIST OF LIFE" WHO MERGED SPORT AND ART

news single

Swiss-born Gary Bernasconi is a unique individual who describes himself as an "artist of life." His essence is woven from the inseparable unity of two different worlds: high-performance sports requiring iron discipline, and mysterious art filled with subtle nuances. "My life is an eternal union of art and movement. Here, creative inspiration and physical discipline complement each other, leading to new heights," says our protagonist. Gary is a frequent and honored guest in Kazakhstan. He is connected to our vast steppes not only by work but by a deep-rooted spiritual continuity. Gary is particularly enchanted by the free spirit of the Kazakhs, their rich craftsmanship, and the mysterious world of nomadic culture. He proudly notes that the meticulousness of Kazakh masters in their attention to detail resonates with his own sculpting techniques.

FROM LUGANO TO AROGNO: ECHOES OF CHILDHOOD

Gary grew up in the picturesque Ticino region of Switzerland. His industrious nature was tempered in the family hotel business in Lugano. However, the soul of the youth raised among mountains and stones always longed for the freedom and mysteries of nature. His creative origins lie in Arogno, in his grandmother’s house filled with warmth. Today, that home has become Gary’s ancestral nest and sacred workshop. "Ticino is my roots. Although I started working early in Lugano, my heart always hurried back to the peace of Arogno. Now, when I am free from coaching, I come to this workshop to heal my soul. My main goal now is to tell a whole story through every creation," he says, linking the past and the present.

  THE TEACHER WHO CONQUERED OLYMPUS

In the world of sports, Gary is a true "alchemist" standing behind legendary names. He is the head strength and conditioning coach for the Swiss national Ski Aerials team. His main task is to prepare an athlete's body to be as strong as steel for extreme loads and as delicate as silk in its flexibility. His pupils are stars who have reached Olympic summits, such as Noé Roth and Pirmin Werner. "For me, coaching is creativity. I don't just see the athlete's muscles; I see their inner energy and personality. Only the balance between wordless intuition and strict technique leads to victory," says Gary. His coaching is an art that explores the limits of human potential.

THE THREE PILLARS OF ART: SCULPTURE, PAINTING, JEWELRY

Gary’s art is not a pre-drawn "plan" but an ongoing "process." When sculpting, he surrenders his hands to the will of the material, subconsciously searching for form. Clay and stone come to life between his fingers, turning into mystical entities. "I don’t know the final result in advance. Forms arise spontaneously during the work and define their own direction. These created images feel like living, breathing creatures." His style in painting is also a field for boundless experimentation. Meanwhile, jewelry making brought Gary closer to the anatomy of the human body and the harmony of every fine line. "It still amazes me how the smallest element forms an entire world. This meticulousness has become a core principle in my coaching as well," says the master.

THE MYSTERY OF THE KOBYZ AND THE SPIRIT OF THE STEPPE

Gary Bernasconi comes to Kazakhstan not just as a professional, but as a spiritual seeker. He admires the skill of Kazakh artisans in bringing natural materials to life. Gary, who sings and loves art with all his heart, returned to Switzerland bringing the sacred Kazakh kobyz and sherter with him. These are not just artifacts; they represent a new milestone in his creativity. Now, on the slopes of the Alps, he is learning to play the mournful sound of the kobyz, which resembles a human voice. The vibration and depth of the kobyz allow him to feel the infinity and freedom of the steppe. In the high peaks of Switzerland, the haunting sound of the Kazakh kobyz echoes, becoming a golden bridge between two cultures.

A TALENT WHO SPEAKS WITH NATURE AND A FRIEND OF SHYMBULAK

Gary's connection with nature is almost legendary. The way wild deer in the Alpine valleys come to listen as he plays music is clear evidence of the purity of his inner world. He is a man of feeling who understands the language of both animals and mountains. During the days spent at Shymbulak in Almaty, he feels every breath of the mountain. A photo of him hugging and carrying the famous Shymbulak dog moved many on social media. In this picture, one sees not a stern world-class coach, but a big-hearted man showing mercy to a small creature. HARMONY OF DISCIPLINE AND INSPIRATION "Art, like sport, teaches us endurance. Discipline and inspiration are my two wings," Gary concludes. Gary Bernasconi is a unique personality who has absorbed European intellectuality and the freedom of nomads. This spiritual connection between his workshop in Lugano and the vast steppes of Kazakhstan will undoubtedly serve as the foundation for many more wonderful creations and sporting victories.
